she handedly defeats marco rubio, rand paul, and jeb bush. in the mcclatchy and marist poll. here it gets interesting. let's take a look at christie, governor christie who this show seems to like. the one republican that gives clinton and biden a run for the money is chris christie of jersey. hillary clinton beats him by 46%/43%. biden loses to christie. there, gene, is sort of the pivot right there. >> look, one thing about that number, though, we know what hillary clinton is like as a national candidate. we don't know yet know what chris christie is like as a national candidate. how he translates to rest of the country. we'll see. >> also one other thing. cynthia, not to prescribe what's going to happen in this campaign, hillary clinton fits the democratic party like a glove. she is not a hyphenated -- working people, middle class people. men and women. not too left. not too right. in fact, definitely not to left. a little notch to the right of obama, right there in the sweet spot. the other guy, chris christie, probably could win the democratic nomination in a certain year

immigration reform gets done, despite the fact that george bush is for it despite the fact that marco rubio's for it despite the fact that steve schmitt will advocate for it now. >> there's a theory with growing momentum republicans don't need hispanic votes, they need more white votes. this is a conservative activist voicing that argument in a may radio interview. >> the people of the republican should reach out to are the white votes that the white voters are who didn't vote in the last election and there are millions of them. i think when you have an establishment-run nomination system they give us a series of losers which they've given us with dole and mccain and romney. >> now, karl rove disagrees, writing in a recent "wall street journal" op-ed a reagan-like percentage of white voters would yield a narrower win because the nonwhite share of the vote doubled to 28% in 2013 from 13% in 84. the reality is that the nonwhite share of the vote will keep growing if the gop leaves nonwhite voters to the democrats, then it's margins and safe congressional districts, and red states will dwindle.

paul, bush, rubio, christie. each of whom represents a totally different route for the party. don't underestimate rand paul. just the kind of candidates parties do run when they're up against someone like hillary clinton. when republicans couldn't beat lyndon johnson after the kennedy assassination they ran barry goldwater. when democrats couldn't beat richard nixon they ran george mcgovern. not that they didn't believe in those men.
